About Almaden

With two generations of experience, 50 years of entrepreneurship, and a proven record of discovery, Almaden Minerals has a long and successful history in the business of exploration.

It all started when…

Almaden was founded by Duane Poliquin in 1981 and brought public in 1986. Morgan Poliquin joined in 1996, and since then, the father and son team has been exploring for new minerals deposits in North America.  Discoveries by Duane Poliquin, before Almaden was founded, include the Santa Fe Gold Deposit, the Apex Germanium-Gallium Deposit, the Nevada Scheelite Extension. The Trinidad Gold Mine, the Caballo Blanco Deposit, and the Ixtaca Deposit were discovered by Almaden fieldwork.

Over the years, Almaden has built an unrivalled geological database using our innovative geological analysis and old-school, boots-on-the-ground prospecting. The process starts by compiling historical areas of interest, geophysical data, Aster satellite imagery, and a pioneering understanding of North American geology.  (Morgan Poliquin completed his Ph.D. on the geology of Eastern Mexico.)  Once targets are identified, we visit each one by helicopter-supported fieldwork and take samples for analysis.

The Ixtaca Deposit was discovered in 2010 on one these helicopter exploration programs.  Since that first visit, Almaden has drilled over 500 holes in the area and outlined a multi-million-ounce silver and gold deposit.

In order for Almaden to focus on taking the Ixtaca into production, in 2015 a new sister company was formed to manage Almaden’s other minerals prospects.  Almadex Minerals is still managed by Duane and Morgan Poliquin and holds the geological database created by Almaden.

Almaden believes strongly in building positive partnerships with all stakeholders, and we have always supported the communities we work with and within.  By employing local people, respecting their culture and property, and financing projects that are important to them such as improving access to education, health care, and fresh water, we are committed to making a positive social difference.
